Photo Collective is an Australian arts organisation that brings together photographers, educators, and curators to support and promote contemporary photography. Formed in 2021, it is the result of a merger between two key initiatives: the Australian Photography Awards (APA) and The Fox Darkroom & Gallery.
Between 2014 and 2021, the Fox Darkroom & Gallery operated in Melbourne’s inner west as an exhibition and educational space, playing a vital role in community access to photographic learning and public engagement with visual art.
The Australian Photography Awards, founded in 2016, continues as an annual celebration of photographic excellence across the country. It recognises diverse photographic practices and serves as a major platform for both emerging and established artists.
Photo Collective is directed by a small team—Harriet Tarbuck, Tom Goldner, and Angus Scott—and operates as a financially and politically independent entity. It promotes accessibility in the arts and focuses on creating opportunities for photographers through a range of activities and platforms.
The organisation publishes Photo Collective Magazine and releases multiple publications each year. These publications aim to showcase high-quality work, highlight contemporary issues, and reflect a diverse range of voices within Australian photography.
Photo Collective’s digital presence reaches over 150,000 people annually, with a regular newsletter and social media audience of around 97,000. It shares photography-based content daily, supports collaboration among creatives across Australia, and continues to be a central voice in the country’s photographic culture.
