Australian artist Andrew Hazewinkel will present his latest solo exhibition in Greece, titled Ghost sensations / Machine dreams, at the Nordic Library in Athens on Tuesday, May 20, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. The exhibition showcases a series of atmospheric photographs captured on film in the early morning hours during the COVID-19 lockdowns, offering a contemplative perspective on Athens’ ancient ruins and monuments.
The photographs depict some of the city’s most iconic archaeological sites—vacant, silent, and bathed in pre-dawn light—transforming them into spectral presences. Shot during a time of global stillness, the images draw attention to the temporal layers of the city and evoke themes of ephemerality, endurance, and collective memory.

Unconventionally installed within the Nordic Library’s book stacks, each image rests on a hidden foundation of books. This presentation conceptually subverts the traditional academic hierarchy where images are often secondary to text. Instead, Hazewinkel uses the literal weight of literature to support his images, prompting a reflection on how knowledge, memory, and perception are materially constructed.
Hazewinkel’s multidisciplinary practice integrates photography, sculpture, archival research, and museum-based inquiry. His academic work is grounded in Material Engagement Theory, exploring the relationship between the body, material culture, and cognition. He holds a PhD from the University of Sydney and is currently an Honorary Research Fellow at the Finnish Institute at Athens.
The artist has previously exhibited in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Slovenia, Belgium, and Greece. Ghost sensations / Machine dreams marks a significant moment in his career, bridging his interests in archaeology, the photographic medium, and embodied memory.
The event is free and open to the public.
