At That Particular Moment: The Impact of Climate Change on Denali’s Majestic Landscape

Rohan Hutchinson’s At That Particular Moment is a captivating and thought-provoking photobook that marks a significant milestone in the artist’s career. This special edition, limited to only 75 signed and numbered copies, presents an intimate and poignant exploration of Alaska’s Denali National Park, home to North America’s highest peak, Mount Denali. The photobook serves as a visual sequel to Hutchinson’s acclaimed earlier work An Error Has Occurred/Polar Convergence and offers a rare glimpse into a landscape that is rapidly transforming due to the pressures of climate change.

The book’s 15 images document Hutchinson’s journey into Denali National Park in late 2024, a trip inspired by the mountain’s unique characteristics, including its high altitude variance and the way it generates its own weather patterns. These phenomena, combined with the undeniable impact of climate change, form the backdrop of Hutchinson’s exploration. At That Particular Moment invites viewers to reflect on the beauty and fragility of this remote environment, as well as the effects of human interference.

The photobook is divided into three distinct yet interconnected chapters: Entry Points, Interventions, and To Be Continued. Each section offers a different perspective on the landscape, contributing to the overarching narrative of a world in flux.

  • Entry Points begins with Hutchinson’s introduction to the park and his project. This chapter serves as an entryway into the expansive, pristine wilderness of Denali, showcasing its grandeur and the starkness of the surrounding environment.
  • Interventions is perhaps the most striking section, where Hutchinson documents the profound and often disturbing marks left by human activity. Whether it’s the impact of tourism, infrastructure, or climate change, the imagery here starkly contrasts the park’s natural beauty with the inevitable traces of human presence and intervention.
  • To Be Continued captures the landscapes that are still in a state of transition. These images reflect the ongoing changes to the environment, offering a sense of uncertainty and the delicate balance between preservation and destruction.

This special edition photobook is beautifully crafted, designed not only to serve as a visual record but also as an artwork in its own right. The book features 17 single 200gsm printed sheets, each showcasing Hutchinson’s compelling images of Denali. The custom-made slipcase box with trifold inset and foil-stamped cover adds a layer of sophistication, making it a true collector’s item.

One of the most innovative features of this edition is the inclusion of two 2mm clear acrylic sheets. These sheets serve as external frames, allowing owners to rotate and display individual sheets as standalone artworks in their homes or studios. This interactive element adds another level of engagement with the work, making it a dynamic experience for the viewer.
