Barcelona gears up for the 2025 Experimental Photo Festival

Barcelona will once again become the global hub of experimental photography this July as the 2025 edition of the Experimental Photo Festival returns to the city from July 23 to 27. Organized by the non-profit cultural association Experimentalphotofestival, the event celebrates experimental photography in all its diverse forms and is open to artists of all skill levels from around the world.

This year’s festival kicks off on the evening of July 22 with an exhibition opening, followed by four days packed with workshops, talks, debates, and cultural events. The core program begins each morning at the Pati Llimona Civic Center, where attendees will register and head into a full day of creative engagement. As in previous editions, evenings will be filled with exhibition launches and performances across multiple venues including the Institut d’Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya, the Experimental Hub, and the Photo & Art Space.

With over 30 countries represented, the festival maintains its inclusive, grassroots ethos. Content will be delivered in both Spanish and English, reflecting the diversity of its participants. Registration is open and required for those wishing to take part in workshops, though conferences and exhibition openings remain free of charge and open to the public.

Highlighting the importance of community, the organizers have again partnered with the University of Barcelona to offer affordable accommodation for up to 300 participants at a student residence. This co-living setup is a signature aspect of the festival experience, designed to foster connections and a sense of camaraderie among artists and attendees.

A unique element of this year’s edition is the Art Swap Space, where participants can display and sell their own small-scale artistic productions like zines, film rolls, and handmade photobooks. Products must be original works and are sold commission-free to keep things accessible and community-driven.

In the lead-up to the main event, an international residency will also take place from July 12 to 22. Selected artists will conduct and attend workshops focusing on experimental practices, culminating in a group exhibition that reflects the collaborative and interdisciplinary spirit of the program.

Founded in Barcelona, the Experimentalphotofestival organization has built a strong reputation for championing inclusive, egalitarian spaces in the arts. It emphasizes respect and diversity at every level of engagement, actively supporting LGBTQ+ communities and marginalized voices.
