Berlin’s premier photo festival returns with a stark look at society’s fractures

The European Month of Photography (EMOP Berlin), Germany’s largest biennial photography festival, has unveiled its 2025 program under the urgent motto “What stands between us.” Running throughout February and March, the festival will confront rising political tensions and the fragility of democracies across Europe, leveraging photography as a tool for dialogue and reflection.

Against a backdrop of destabilizing political climates, EMOP Berlin 2025 seeks to challenge divisive narratives by showcasing photographic works that explore conflict, societal fractures, and shared humanity. Organizers emphasize the festival’s role in fostering “observations, experiences, expectations, hopes, and fears” through visual storytelling. “Democracies require constant re-examination and re-establishment,” states the festival’s manifesto. “Through images, we aim to bridge divides and spark conversations that counteract polarization.”

The festival’s centerpiece, “Photography as a Medium of Chronicle,” will debut on February 27, 20, at the Academy of Arts on Hansetatenweg. The exhibition features projects by approximately 20 contemporary artists, whose works document and interrogate modern conflicts—from ideological clashes to environmental crises. The opening days will include artist talks, panel discussions on art’s role in democracy, a curated film evening, and an awards ceremony honoring standout contributions to photographic journalism and art. The festivities will culminate in the EMOP Opening Party, a vibrant celebration of creativity and solidarity.

EMOP Berlin’s strength lies in its partnerships. Over 100 institutions—museums, galleries, universities, cultural centers, and private collections—will participate, hosting satellite exhibitions and events across the city. This collective effort underscores Berlin’s status as a hub for artistic innovation and critical discourse. “The festival thrives because of Berlin’s dynamic cultural ecosystem,” says a spokesperson. “From established galleries to grassroots project spaces, every venue adds a unique voice to this urgent conversation

As Europe grapples with rising nationalism, misinformation, and social inequality, EMOP Berlin positions photography not just as an art form but as a civic instrument. By chronicling both visible and invisible divides—migrant struggles, climate displacement, digital alienation—the festival challenges viewers to confront what separates societies and imagine pathways to unity.
