Reimagining Identity in Divergent Archetypes for Old Ideas

Divergent Archetypes for Old Ideas is the latest exhibition by Adelaide-based photographer Brent Leideritz, now on display at FortyFiveDownstairs Gallery in Melbourne. Running from 21 January to 1 February 2025, the exhibition offers an insightful exploration of identity, empowerment, and the deconstruction of conventional narratives through a striking collection of photographic and promptographic portraits.

In this body of work, Leideritz pushes boundaries by presenting queer and alternative performances of self that directly challenge societal notions of shame, judgment, and gender roles. The series, shown both as individual prints and as a cohesive sequence, creates a new visual language for identity and self-expression. By reimagining and appropriating traditional archetypes and narratives, Leideritz offers a space for liberation, where individuality and community empowerment take center stage.

With Divergent Archetypes for Old Ideas, Leideritz seeks to dismantle the outdated binaries that have long constrained self-expression. Working closely with their queer and ‘othered’ community, they blur the lines between photographer and subject, creating a space for collaborative storytelling and playful resistance. This approach brings out themes of gender performativity, eroticism, and agency, inviting viewers to reconsider traditional ideas around gender and identity while celebrating the freedom to express oneself authentically.

The exhibition challenges viewers to rethink how identity is shaped—whether through family, culture, or community structures—and how those forces can either oppress or empower individuals. By providing a platform for those often marginalized or silenced, Leideritz creates a visual dialogue that empowers individuals to embrace their true selves without fear of judgment. The collection becomes a call to action, encouraging the ‘othered’ to stand tall in their power, not only for themselves but for the communities they belong to.

Brent Leideritz is an independent Adelaide-based photographer who’s photographic practice originated with film during their self-taught and experimental formative period in the mid to late 90s and early 00s. Their practice has developed into digital mediums, utilising digital post-production and more recently exploring ai-generated promptographic resolutions. They continue to expand on themes and subject matter seeded in their formative years. Brent continues to interrogate identity, producing works that seek to question how an identity is formed and how identity is oppressed or liberated through family, cultural structures, kin and communities.

Through this exhibition, Leideritz invites viewers to engage with themes of resistance, identity formation, and the power of self-expression, all while questioning outdated norms that limit our understanding of the self. Divergent Archetypes for Old Ideas is a bold and necessary step toward reimagining how we see ourselves and each other in a world that too often tries to impose narrow definitions of identity.
