For over 20 years, fortyfivedownstairs has been a vital cultural hub in Melbourne, supporting the development of independent artists across a diverse range of art forms. Located in the heart of the city, this unique multi-arts venue has earned a reputation for its commitment to risk, innovation, and nurturing emerging talent in both the visual and performing arts.
Exhibition Spaces and Theatre
Fortyfivedownstairs is home to two distinct exhibition spaces and a flexible theatre and event venue, providing year-round programming that spans a wide variety of art forms. The gallery, located one floor below street level, is an intimate and dynamic space for exhibitions of photography, drawing, sound art, and more. Here, visitors can experience a curated selection of contemporary works that challenge, inspire, and provoke thought.
Just one floor below, the building’s expansive basement has been transformed into a warehouse-style theatre that plays host to ground-breaking theatre, cabaret, music, opera, and dance performances. The theatre’s eclectic programming ensures that each week brings something new, from classical music recitals to world premieres of bold, new Australian plays featuring award-winning actors.
A Commitment to Artists
As an unfunded and not-for-profit organisation, fortyfivedownstairs prioritises the development and empowerment of artists, striving to generate income for artists—not from them. The venue provides an accessible platform for independent creatives, fostering a supportive environment where risk-taking and experimentation are encouraged. The gallery and theatre are dedicated to creating unique, memorable experiences for audiences, all while embracing diversity, inclusion, and opportunities for artistic expression.
History and Vision
The building at 45 Flinders Lane has a rich history that dates back to the mid-20th century when it served as a site for the industrial rag trade. In the 1990s, the lower ground warehouse space was repurposed as a commercial gallery under Span Galleries. In 2002, Mary Lou Jelbart and Julian Burnside AO QC took over the space, founding fortyfivedownstairs with the vision of creating a curated venue that would seamlessly integrate both live performance and visual art.
The venue expanded in 2007 to take over the derelict basement, which became a dedicated performance space, while the upper floors were transformed into two dedicated galleries for visual arts exhibitions. This expansion solidified fortyfivedownstairs’ reputation as a truly multi-disciplinary arts venue, providing a home for groundbreaking and experimental works across all art forms.
With its commitment to supporting the arts and fostering an inclusive, creative environment, the venue stands as a cornerstone of Melbourne’s vibrant cultural landscape.
