M16 Artspace: A Home for Contemporary Art in Canberra

Located in Canberra, M16 Artspace has been a vital part of the city’s contemporary art scene for nearly four decades. Founded in 1985 as a grassroots initiative by a collective of artists, the space was created to meet the need for affordable studios and exhibition opportunities in the ACT. What began as a small community effort has evolved into one of the most dynamic and inclusive art hubs in the region.

Today, M16 Artspace runs three public galleries, manages over thirty artist studios, and houses several arts organisations that offer classes and workshops for the broader community. New exhibitions launch every four weeks, showcasing a wide range of emerging and established artists from Canberra, across Australia, and beyond.

Beyond providing physical space, M16 Artspace fosters an environment of collaboration, experimentation, and professional development. It maintains strong ties to the community and offers a platform for artists of all backgrounds, generations, and cultures. The gallery is partially supported by the ACT Government, ensuring that its programs remain accessible and ambitious.

M16’s journey is rooted in a deep connection to place. The artspace operates on the lands of the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples, whose cultures and traditions are honoured in the life and work of the organisation. This sense of respect and belonging continues to shape the spirit of M16.

As it prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2025, M16 Artspace looks toward the future with exciting plans, including a move to the upcoming Kingston Foreshore Arts Precinct. With a history built on resilience, creativity, and community, M16 remains a vibrant force in Australia’s contemporary art landscape.
