Melbourne Art Book Fair: A Decade of Design in Print

This May, the Melbourne Art Book Fair returns to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) for its eleventh edition, reaffirming the city’s status as a global hub for art publishing and design. The Fair will once again transform the NGV’s Great Hall into a vibrant marketplace of ideas, creativity, and collaboration.

Established in 2015 by the NGV, the Melbourne Art Book Fair was conceived in response to the burgeoning art book scenes in cities like New York and Los Angeles. Since then, it has grown into a cornerstone event of Melbourne Design Week, itself an initiative of the Victorian Government. The Fair celebrates the city’s rich literary and artistic culture, a legacy that was internationally recognized when Melbourne was designated a UNESCO City of Literature in 2008.

This year’s Fair promises an exciting mix of familiar faces and new voices. Over 100 publishers, artists, and designers from the Asia-Pacific region and beyond will present their work, offering attendees a chance to explore and purchase a diverse array of printed matter—from limited edition books and zines to art prints and magazines. The Stallholder Fair, held in the NGV’s Great Hall (May 16-18), remains a highlight, providing a unique opportunity for direct engagement between creators and the public.

Curated by Megan Patty and coordinated by Sen Vanderzalm, the Fair continues to foster a dynamic exchange of ideas among industry professionals and enthusiasts alike. Their leadership ensures that the event not only showcases high-quality publications but also encourages meaningful conversations about the role of print in contemporary art and design.

As part of Melbourne Design Week, the Melbourne Art Book Fair underscores the city’s commitment to nurturing creative industries and promoting cultural dialogue. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a curious newcomer, the Fair offers a welcoming space to discover the latest in art publishing and to connect with a community passionate about the printed word.
