After captivating audiences since its opening in November last year, the Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024 exhibition continues to make waves at the Australian National Maritime Museum, inviting visitors to explore the breathtaking beauty—and growing fragility—of our planet’s oceans. With just a few weeks remaining before it closes on April 27, 2025, this is your chance to experience one of the world’s most powerful photographic exhibitions dedicated to the sea.
Now in its fifth year, the Ocean Photographer of the Year, presented by London-based Oceanographic Magazine, has grown into a globally recognised celebration of ocean photography, attracting submissions from some of the most talented photographers around the world. This year’s exhibition showcases 118 extraordinary images, each one capturing a unique and often emotional perspective of life below—and around—the surface.
From awe-inspiring encounters with marine wildlife to poignant scenes that reflect the impact of human activity, the exhibition spans a range of themes and emotions. Categories include:
- The Ocean
- Wildlife
- Fine Art
- Adventure
- Conservation (Hope)
- Conservation (Impact)
- Human Connection Award
- Young Photographer of the Year
- Ocean Portfolio Award
Also featured is the Female Fifty Fathoms Award, established in 2021 by Oceanographic Magazine in partnership with luxury Swiss watchmaker Blancpain. This award honours a woman whose outstanding portfolio has been nominated by her peers, promoting greater representation and recognition of women in ocean photography.
Each image tells a story—some haunting, others hopeful—all reminding us of the urgent need to protect the ecosystems that sustain us. From vibrant coral gardens and majestic marine creatures to quiet moments of human interaction with the sea, the photographs call viewers to reconnect with the oceans and the role we all play in their future.
