Melbourne’s Project8 Gallery is currently home to a hauntingly poetic exhibition by The Ghosts of Nothing, the collaborative duo of Sean Lowry and Ilmar Taimre. Titled Sounds of Clouds, the exhibition is curated by Kim Donaldson and forms the second instalment in a long-form, three-part postconceptual artwork. It follows Sounds of Unridden Waves (2020–) and will eventually conclude with a third chapter, as yet unnamed.
This ongoing project explores themes of ambiguous meaning, sensory immersion, and interpretive instability. At the centre of Sounds of Clouds is a feature-length film and an original ambient soundtrack—both released in 2024. These are presented within a layered installation comprising paintings, photographs, sculptural objects, and limited-edition artefacts. Each element is selected and arranged in direct response to the unique spatial and sensory characteristics of the venue.
At Project8, the gallery is transformed into an otherworldly environment where meaning does not unfold linearly but instead drifts—like the clouds themselves—shifting, dissolving, and re-forming. The works resist definitive interpretation. Visitors are not invited to decode a fixed story, but to experience a constellation of sensations and symbols.
As the artists describe it, Sounds of Clouds is a meditation on clouds “at the limits of interpretation.” A subtle, quasi-narrative arc is implied, but this remains elusive. There is no clear time or place—only a spectral presence, familiar yet alien, comforting yet uncanny. Clouds here become metaphors for the intangible: for perception, memory, and the flux of thought.
Materiality is central to the exhibition’s impact. Sculptural and printed objects expand the project into a spatial experience rather than a static presentation. Visitors move through an evolving landscape—at once ancient and futuristic, real and imagined.
Curator Kim Donaldson, a practising artist and academic, frames the show within a lineage of conceptual and post-medium practices. The Ghosts of Nothing work across fiction, performance, sound, visual art, and philosophy. Their practice doesn’t merely explore ambiguity—it inhabits it.
By refusing clarity, Sounds of Clouds opens space for multiple interpretations. It invites viewers to consider not what a work of art means, but how it feels, moves, and unfolds over time. This approach feels particularly urgent in an age of rapid consumption and algorithmic simplification.
The exhibition reflects the artists’ long-term commitment to a cumulative postconceptual practice, where each iteration builds upon the last—even as meanings remain open. What visitors encounter at Project8 is both a self-contained experience and a single moment in an evolving, never-finalised artwork.
