The Museum of Australian Photography (MAPh), formerly known as the Monash Gallery of Art (MGA), is Australia’s premier public institution exclusively dedicated to the collection, conservation, and exhibition of Australian photography. Established in 1990, the museum has evolved to become a significant cultural destination, championing Australian photography and inspiring audiences to embrace and value this art form.
MAPh is the proud custodian of over 3,860 Australian photographs, reflecting the nation’s rich photographic history. This extensive collection underscores the museum’s commitment to preserving and showcasing the diversity and evolution of Australian photography.
Situated in Wheelers Hill, Victoria, MAPh offers visitors stunning views of Melbourne’s south-east and the Dandenong Ranges. The original building, designed by internationally renowned architect Harry Seidler, remains the only formal art gallery space he designed. In 2000, the building was expanded with additions by Cox Sanderson Ness, enhancing its status as a fine example of contemporary Australian architecture.
The museum’s landscaped grounds feature a sculpture park, allowing visitors to experience art both indoors and outdoors. This harmonious integration of architecture and environment provides a serene setting for appreciating the art of photography.
In 2023, the institution rebranded from MGA to MAPh, reflecting its renewed vision to champion Australian photography, creativity, innovation, and the arts. This transformation marked a significant moment in the museum’s history, celebrating its legacy and future aspirations.
MAPh also hosts the prestigious William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize, further solidifying its role in promoting excellence in Australian photography.
