MACK and Webber present Yorgos Lanthimos: Photographs, the first-ever exhibition dedicated to the still photography of the acclaimed filmmaker. Running from March 29 to May 24, 2025, at Webber 939 in Los Angeles, the exhibition offers a rare glimpse into Lanthimos’ photographic practice, expanding his distinctive visual language beyond the screen and into the realm of fine art.
This compelling showcase features works from two of his most recent books: i shall sing these songs beautifully (MACK, 2024), created during the filming of his upcoming feature Kinds of Kindness (2024), and Dear God, the Parthenon is Still Broken (Void, 2024), shot on the sets of his Oscar-winning film Poor Things (2023). To mark the exhibition’s opening, Yorgos Lanthimos will be in conversation with publisher Michael Mack on Saturday, March 29, at 5:00 PM.
Renowned for his surreal and often unsettling cinematic worlds, Lanthimos has long been recognized for his ability to blur the lines between reality and fiction. With this debut photography exhibition, he extends his practice beyond moving images, creating a standalone body of work that is both deeply rooted in his films and yet entirely its own.
Set against real locations in New Orleans and Budapest, as well as reconstructed environments evoking London, Lisbon, Alexandria, and Paris, the photographs reveal eerie, enigmatic compositions. Figures appear with striking physicality—limbs contorted, faces obscured—capturing an atmosphere that is at once familiar and alien.
In i shall sing these songs beautifully, Lanthimos repurposes the actors and sets of Kinds of Kindness to construct an entirely new narrative, independent of the film itself. Meanwhile, Dear God, the Parthenon is Still Broken disrupts traditional cinematic boundaries, incorporating elements of the filmmaking process—lighting rigs, scaffolding, a discarded coffee cup—into its frames, further dissolving the separation between constructed worlds and reality.
Though deeply tied to the spaces of Lanthimos’ cinema, this exhibition exists as something entirely distinct—a universe free from conventional narrative, time, and place. These images reinforce Lanthimos’ position not only as a master filmmaker but as a key figure in contemporary visual culture, with a unique photographic eye that stands firmly within the artistic canon.
With this exhibition, audiences have a rare opportunity to experience the full scope of Lanthimos’ vision—beyond his films, beyond traditional storytelling, and into a world of haunting, poetic stillness.
